The Hengfu (衡复) conservation area is Shanghai's most complete surviving slice of the former French Concession — the plane-tree quarter bounded roughly by Huaihai Middle Road, Hengshan Road and the streets between, protected since 2007 as a historical conservation area. Its character is the plane-tree street: art-deco apartment blocks, garden flats, lane houses and villas under one continuous canopy, with the readable-architecture plaque programme telling each building's story. The area's two flagship walks are the Wukang Road heritage triangle — the 1924 Wukang Building 'ship', the courtyards and the market streets of the most photographed corner in Shanghai — and the Hengshan Road grand avenue, running south from the 1925 Community Church through the 1921 Pathe jazz villa to the cathedral and the Xujiahui Source. Both walks are flat, free and metro-served: Line 10/11 at 交通大学站 anchors the Wukang triangle, Line 1 frames Hengshan Road, and every street in the quarter feeds back toward the canopy.
